Self-Assessment of Leadership, Collaboration, and Ethics
Leadership entails creating a sense of teamwork, establishing trust, and directing a team towards a common purpose. Leadership can be effective using a resocialization of the leadership style, employing the right approaches of communication, and showing responsibility in integrating the team members positively (Bourne, 2022). This evaluation can be associated with individual leadership, teamwork, and major ethical issues in decision-making. The first part of the course is devoted to leadership skills and collaboration within the working environment, and the second part concerns moral issues that are usually encountered within the medical industry.
Section 1: Leadership and Collaboration Experience
During my final university year, I had to mentor a group of five students on a capstone project that aimed at coming up with a digital marketing plan for a local business. We shared the same vision of creating a comprehensive, in-depth plan that would maximize the presence of the client on the Internet and interaction with customers. My style of leadership was transformational, which enabled the team to be creative, empowered individuals, and work together as a team. Transformational leadership is a leadership style that focuses on motivation, vision, and support and has been found to improve team performance and innovation (Ystaas et al., 2023). In an attempt to establish the stakeholder commitment, I organised a pre-term meeting with the business owner to make them understand their expectations and informed them of our plan to meet them.
I made conscious efforts to delegate duties based on the strength of individual members, which enhanced efficiency and morale. Among the key decisions that I made was to have weekly check-ins to track progress and adjust the timelines, and they kept us on track. I did, though, fail at first to deal with the underperformance of a member of my team, which resulted in one aspect of our campaign lagging. In hindsight, I ought to have done more and earlier in offering more decisive accountability structures. To be open and have a purpose, I used a combination of the joint document and weekly Zoom meetings to state the objective of the project, deadlines, and my individual tasks. I ensured open communication and active listening, which created confidence and team dynamics. In general, despite the challenges, the experience helped me to understand the importance of making decisions on time, flexibility, and clear and consistent communication in leadership.
Collaboration and Motivation Analysis
To ensure that the team members worked as a team and were driven, I focused on creating an open and inclusive culture where all members were listened to and treated with respect. At the very beginning, I made clear pronouncements regarding the level of interaction and encouraged open communication with frequent meetings and a shared online environment. Effective teams and successful collaboration rely on establishing strong communication and trust (Riva et al., 2025). I facilitated discussions by encouraging other quiet members to speak and ensured that each member had a role that they could perform best and with their interests. This led to the involvement and improved teamwork in the team.
There was good communication among the participants. We were respectful, we dealt with issues in constructive ways, and we provided feedback on a regular basis. Where there was an instance of miscommunication, I would intervene to settle the score and focus on our shared goals, which made sure that the wrangles did not go on. To motivate the team, I always connected our daily work to the bigger picture of helping a real-life client to ensure their business was better.
I acknowledged personal contributions during group gatherings and complimented achievements, which boosted motivation. Another boost that enhanced investment in the project was the fact that I brought creativity and independence in how the team members handled their work. Despite the fact that the degree of motivation may have risen and fallen now and then, I tried to maintain a good level of clarity, encouragement, and enthusiasm to make the group motivated and ready to achieve success.
Section 2: Ethics Experience
In the process of deploying a remote patient monitoring (RPM) solution, I faced a serious ethical conflict because I was a project coordinator of a healthcare organization. Among the greatest issues that were revealed in the project was the noncompliance of the software provided by the vendor with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which compromised patient privacy. HIPAA is a federal law that establishes the conditions of protecting sensitive health information in the case of unauthorized access or disclosure (Edemekong et al., 2024). This created a conflict between the completion of a project and patient data security.
In order to rectify the situation, I also referred to the set of ethical principles as the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), as per which it is necessary to protect patient data (American College of Healthcare Executives, n.d.). To address the gravity of the situation, I had a meeting with the information technology (IT), compliance, and legal people to identify the extent of compliance of the vendor and to know the other options. After a thorough discussion, we all agreed to postpone the RPM system implementation until the moment when a fully HIPAA-compatible solution is offered.
Although this decision went against our schedule, it was not against our ethics and safeguarded the privacy of the patients. Ethical considerations in medical decision-making help to build trust and patient-centered care and sustainability in the long-term organizational integrity (Olejarczyk and Young, 2024). The compliance over convenience choice was that we have made our stand very clear on the issue of ethics and advertised the company image as a company that cares about patient safety and integrity in business practices when it comes to healthcare.
Conclusion
The experiences have highlighted the importance of good leadership, cooperation, and ethical decision-making in a healthcare setting. Cogitating about my leadership style and strategies I applied to promote the effectiveness of working in a team and the motivation of the collective work, I got to know something valuable about my strengths and weaknesses as a leader. The ethical issues that occurred in the RPM project enabled me to underline my desire to act with integrity and ensure that I observe the utmost ethical standards in all actions and decisions made.
