“As a learner in the field of public health, it is quite fundamental to build a strong professional identity to comprehend my purpose of promoting population health, preventing disease, and other health inequities. Professional identity in public health entails the ability to combine knowledge, ethics, and leadership skills in order to facilitate evidence-based decision-making and community relationships. My values and competencies are being formed through constant learning, collaboration and reflection, and I am determined to make my contribution to the workforce in the field of public health. It is a reflection that will give me a chance to understand why my academic path, real-life experience, and personal goals have shaped my future professional identity as a future practitioner in the field of public health.

1. What was the reason behind your decision to study your major?

My experience in one of the local community hospitals made me learn that prevention and education could be of even greater impact than treatment itself. This experience further strengthened my urge to be more knowledgeable about the social determinants of health and health equity. The policy, research, and community power of the professionals in the field of public health has become a reflective consciousness of mine as a result of my professional investigations of the field. This experience has also added to my professional identity as it has taught me that compassion, evidence, and community involvement are the starting point of actual change.

2. How do you define your professional identity?

“I consider myself a growing professional in the field of public health and am determined to advance in the profession based on the following statements: Compassion, integrity, and accountability are the values that shape my identity and determine how I interact with people and societies. In my opinion, all individuals have equal rights to access health facilities and have a chance to attain optimal health. I want to become an advocate for underserved groups, design community interventions, and make a contribution to the policies that would solve the root of the health disparities. I am oriented towards social responsibility and lifelong learning, teamwork, and ethics in serving the community in the field of public health.

3. How do you think DEI influences your attitudes, beliefs, or actions as a professional?

I think that the adoption of various opinions is enriching to the practice of health in the community and contributes to a more balanced intervention. It implies that I personally engage in efforts to correct assumptions and acknowledge power imbalances, and propose strategies that cannot leave out marginalized voices, but include them instead. DEI motivates me to be inclusive in my practices: I attempt to work with communities considerately, differentiating health messages to various cultures, and providing access to underserved groups. I will also undertake life-long learning regarding implicit bias, structural inequities, and their intersection with health outcomes. Finally, DEI would not only affect what I attempt to accomplish, but also the manner in which I do it, together, in a caring and respectful way towards the dignity of every individual.

4. What are some of the challenges or expectations that you anticipate in this program?

“One of the issues that I would expect to face in this program is balancing between the academic rigor, research tasks, and implementation in community environments. The field of public health needs to combine both the theoretical concepts and the real-life problem-solving, thus requiring critical thinking and flexibility. Another issue that I am likely to experience is the thorough topics like policy analysis, data interpretation, and program evaluation that will challenge me to broaden my analytical abilities. But I perceive these problems as a chance to develop. I believe that the program will help me to enhance my leadership skills, expand my perspectives on the population health problems, and be able to play an important role in the evidence-based practice of population health.

5. What are the personal, academic, or professional goals you hope to achieve through this program?

Personally, I would like to be more courageous and considerate as a professional who would approach health problems with cultural sensitivity and ethical evaluation. Academia-wise, I would seek to enhance my research and data analysis abilities to offer evidence-based decision-making. My professional goal is to develop and implement effective community health interventions to reduce inequalities and improve care access. Ultimately, I believe that this program will enable me to have a leadership role in the area of public health to be able to make a positive and sustainable change.

Not only is this program developing my academic skills, but it is also building my purpose as a future professional in the field of public health. I have also appreciated that compassion, equity, and accountability are critical to the development of meaningful health results in various communities. In the future, I would like to keep learning, working together, and supporting the policies that enhance well-being and social justice.
