Subject: Advocacy for Equitable Depression Care Among Black/African American Adults
Dear Editor,

Integration of the provision of depression services within the community-based primary care delivery system is the health care need for Black/African Americans in the United States (Kirk et al., 2025). In the opinion of Kirk et al. (2025), specialized mental health care services aimed at meeting the social needs of patients will – apart from other things – help in integrating specialist mental health care services and behavioral health care services. It has been confirmed by Konstantopoulos et al. (2023) that among the Black primary care patients, negative mental health problems are caused by unmet social needs.

In order to start implementing culturally competent mental health care policies, mental health and behavioral health services have to be delivered within the primary care setting. Behavioral health problems should be detected and addressed at the earliest possible stage.

The key consideration here is to concentrate on integrated care since it presents the optimal way of ensuring that there is consistency in care delivery and to help address the gaps in care delivery that exist. To close the gap in care delivery, it will be necessary to invest more in the systems of mental health care to promote equity and to reduce the gaps in care that are quite evident. Integrating behavioral health into primary care, among other initiatives, will help in building the necessary therapeutic relationship and trust, and thus improving the responsiveness of the community to the demand barriers that hinder access to mental health services. While it will be necessary to consider issues such as anticipated implementation of related concerns, inadequate labor force/design funding, diverse training gaps, etc., at the end of the day, more resources have to be committed towards implementing mental health care systems.

A complete involvement in a policy needs participation on all levels among the staff, from nurses, primary care providers, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, community health workers and others. Each profession has its own knowledge about how to manage depression among the vulnerable and under-served population. Models of care that encourage collaboration can assist in improving the follow-up care and can prevent fragmentation in mental health service provision, particularly among racial and ethnic minorities (Yang et al., 2024). This implementation of policy recommendations among Federally Qualified Health Centers, outpatient clinics and community health service delivery sites offers the chance to innovate mental health service provision among adult Black/African Americans.
