Introduction

The organizational structure stands for the hierarchy and reporting links that exist within a given organization, and officially describes the individual roles and tasks that are performed by the different personnel, as well as the communication channels that exist (Joseph & Gaba, 2020). It is the basis for the procedures required for proper operation functioning, decision-making, and the right flow of activities.

The assignment focuses on the structural feature of any work or familiar agency and brings to light its formal and informal leadership setup. It is designed to check, the structural model of the organization and compare it to the theoretical approaches; to assess how much informal leadership helps the organization; to evaluate in what ways the general practice recommended by scientists must be used in this case. Eventually, the inquiry will encourage an in-depth comprehension of organizational proficiency and up-close examination of the leadership dynamics found in this context that will ultimately impact future professional practice and organizational improvement projects as the inquirer’s understanding of the situation becomes more crystal.

Organizational Structure Analysis

In the healthcare setting where I am working, the organizational charts follow a typical hierarchical structure commonly present in many healthcare institutions. Ultimately, at the helm of the organizational chain are executive leaders like the CEO and CNO who give vital input and direction to the strategies and the whole institution’s nature of operation (Guild, 2021). The ladder structure is formed by the mid-level managers with some surnames such as nurse managers, unit supervisors, and department heads, who are responsible for managing specific units or departments within the Medical Institution. These managers run the operations; on individual department level, make the cooperation between doctors and team workers possible, and ensure whether the organization’s guidelines and policies are followed or not. Staff nurses, nurses assistants, and mid-level managers, among other health care professionals, comprise the workforce and take part in the provision of direct patient care. This is governed by their superiors. We have a structure that has many vertical and horizontal communications. This function of communication assists in the cross teamwork and joint decision-making as well as complete patient care by every department.

Organizational Structure and Theory

The healthcare facility structure to which I am being exposed during my internship finds a comfortable alignment with various organizational management theories that are commonly applied in organizational management. A theory that is closely related to this is a hierarchical or bureaucratic model created by Max Weber, who thought that a clear hierarchy, specialization of workers, and standardized guidelines and procedures should be in place (Dash & Padhi, 2020). In this hierarchical structure, the CEO is at the top of the rank, followed by a few other levels of management each of which is assigned to a different aspect of running the business. It maintains good order, smooths the decision-making, defines every top-down line, and establishes accountability all over the organization. Also built on the premise of contingency theory which assumes that organizational structures should be flexible in character with varying issues and organizational goal setting as a benchmark. Within the medical industry, the prescription of the hierarchy provides the setting for the most desired actions of centralized decision-making and coordination and in most cases, happens as a top priority to ensure patient safety and quality of care. The system theory approach is also apparent since the organization is a simultaneous system, and every ingredient is greatly important to attain the desired goals.Therefore, the structure holds the key to theoretical frameworks corroborative with the operational efficiency and achievement of organizational objectives. The healthcare setting essentially requires the setup to deliver its essence.

Formal Leadership Plan

Inside the hospital, strong formal leadership is the leading backbone of the whole structure, and it is tasked to ensure that the institution runs smoothly and all resources are well coordinated to allow for the achievement of organizational goals. The boss of the organization is at the very top of the management pyramid (Wellman et al., 2020). They take all the responsibility for the intra-organizational strategic direction, financial management, and production efficiency. The job of the CNO, the person who would report to the CEO, is the Chief Nursing Officer, who is in charge of nursing-related functions, and among other things guarantees compliance with the organization’s mission and values. Constantly, directly under CNO are nurse managers that occupy mid-level management positions that are fit for leading specific units or departments in a facility. Not only that, these nurse managers are a part of the ones who are functioning as the tacticians of the organization at the unit level; they oversee the day-to-day operations, manage the staffing needs, and work to get excellent care for their patients. On the other hand, the roles of the managers, such as the Nursing Education Director, the Quality Improvement Director, and the Patient Services Director, are also demonstrated, as they provide leadership and direction towards the specialized areas they are experts in, enhancing organizational effectiveness and efficiency. Thus, in unison all these formal positions form the basis of organizational structure, they being a guide to the strategic decision-making process, both determining compliance with the norms and developing a culture that enables collaboration and excellence in health care delivery.

Informal Leadership Dynamics

Besides formal leadership positions where the managers and the top-level executive make all the deal, informal leadership dynamics have also been discovered to be relevant in the organizational culture where they regulate the decision-making process. Natural leaders established themselves as power players on the ground because of their talents, and skills in dealing with people (Abbas et al., 2022). Such people were tapped to counsel others because of the obvious quality they oozed all around. These people who possess great influence can greatly impact their peers, colleagues, or both and become a source of inspiration, mentor as well as a spokesperson for the change in the way things are going on. Informal leaders may include nurses with lots of experience who have high expertise in clinical knowledge; unit champions who take charge of quality improvement exercises, or front-line staff who have exceptional interpersonal skills and critical thinking capabilities. They serve as a link that helps to connect leaders and leaders to those who operate daily with organizational success depending on their efforts and work. Their effects go beyond conventional pyramidal organizational structure, emphasizing effectiveness and inclusiveness among the health care team.

Informal leadership along with formal leadership within the healthcare organization performs critically in terms of bringing in alignment, spurring ideas, and doing excellently in teamwork. On the other hand, informal leadership is like soft power, which refers to how leaders can harness their relationships, expertise, and influence with other team members to facilitate working as a team and accomplishing tasks (Velli Parts, 2023). The role of an informal leader is multifaceted as it incorporates of the well between different groups and peers, and serves as an advocate on behalf of the patient-oriented care. They reduce the distance between the management and employees and, thereby, position all team members nearby regarding the set goals and organizational responsibility.

Assessment of whether Informal Leadership has a Positive or Negative Influence

Overall the role played by informal leadership in the organization is, in many cases, positive. It betters the team spirit, it makes transferring knowledge easier, and it encourages a positive working environment. These informal leaders follow the standard of behavior as a way of inspiring the peer group to get the best results. Besides, they assist in the culture that fosters constant enhancement (Harrison & Shortell, 2020). Nevertheless, recognizing that informal leadership sometimes has consequences that go astray, like when it is abused for ends other than cooperation or when it collides with other goals is important. An example of this concept would be if unsanctioned leaders attended the organization’s goals or worked for the organization’s goals using methods that undermine formal leadership. In such a situation, the organization’s effectiveness will be declined. On the contrary formal leadership serves as a complementary role to informal leaders contributing to positive change.

  • Experienced staff nurses mentor new members, who are all new to the team, respectively, the nurses’ role is to give guidance, support, and clinical skills to help new hires’ understanding of the job.
  • An employee who goes above and beyond to lead a quality improvement program to prevent hospital-acquired infections in the workplace might become a unit champion (Harrison & Shortell, 2020). This individual would lead the way, pushing his/her colleagues to join the cause and apply evidence-based practices toward improvements to the safety of patients.
  • This staff person organizes constant team huddles that intend to promote communication, share good practices, and identify problems in the fabric of the system of caregiving (Velli Parts, 2023); consequently, cohesiveness in the workforce is built and efficiency is improved.

In conclusion, we have considered not only the healthcare organization and the leadership structure but also the dynamics within it. The formal hierarchy strengthened by legitimate authority positions forms a basis for a framework that ensures decisions are made in the right places, operations are coordinated and all accountability issues are resolved. Hierarchical leaders, such as CEOs, CNOs, Nurse managers, and department heads are vital to the organizational management and leading direction of the parties. Moreover, on a micro-level, informal leadership comes forth unnoticeably, showing up in the person of individuals who help the group become more cooperative, and creative, and bring about a positive corporate culture.
